What happened

On February 27, 2026, the Bank of Russia filed an action for annulment of Council Regulation (EU) 2025/2600 of December 12, 2025, on the indefinite freezing of Russian sovereign assets. The Bank of Russia alleges infringement of the right to property, the right to effective judicial protection, and the sovereign immunities of the state and the central bank, as well as procedural irregularities (adoption of the Regulation by qualified majority rather than by unanimity).

Why it is notable

Russia’s first-ever international lawsuit concerning its sovereign assets within the EU’s jurisdiction.
