What happened
The federal state unitary enterprise Goszagransobstvennost sought recognition and enforcement in Chile of a judgment of the Basmanny District Court, upheld by higher courts. The judgment granted claims to terminate a lease, recover rent, and return an apartment in Santiago owned by the Russian Federation. On May 25, 2026, the First Chamber of the Supreme Court of Chile unanimously granted exequatur under Article 245 of the Chilean Code of Civil Procedure. The Chilean court accepted the contractual submission of the case to the Russian courts as permissible and found no conflict with public policy.
Why it is notable
A rare instance of enforcement in Latin America of Russian court judgments issued in favor of a Russian state body while foreign sanctions are in force.
