    • ICSID hears disputes between investors and states. Its charges do not depend on the amount in dispute.
    • Each arbitrator is paid $500 an hour, plus $900 a day when travelling for the case. A tribunal has three members unless the parties agree otherwise.
    • In the year to June 30, 2026, ICSID paid $39 million in arbitrators’ fees and expenses across the 363 cases it administered, about $107,000 per case a year.

How the figures are calculated

Each institution’s fees are taken from the schedule in force on October 27, 2026, as published on its own website, and applied to the amount in dispute you enter. The amount is converted into the schedule’s currency, the fees are computed there, and the totals are converted back for comparison. The list is ordered from the cheapest to the most expensive by the top of each range.

The figures are the institution’s charges and the arbitrators’ fees only. They leave out the parties’ own legal fees, experts, translation, hearing venues, the arbitrators’ travel and expenses, a tribunal secretary and any VAT or other tax unless an entry says otherwise. An emergency arbitrator is included only when you choose it. Counterclaims usually add to the amount in dispute and so to the fees.

Three kinds of schedule

Ad valorem scales. Most institutions set the administrative fee and the arbitrators’ fees on a sliding scale by the amount in dispute. Several give the arbitrators’ fees as a range, from a minimum to a maximum, and the institution fixes the actual figure within it at the end of the case, by the complexity of the case, the time spent and the diligence of the tribunal. The list shows the whole range. A three-member tribunal costs more than one arbitrator but rarely three times as much at every institution: each entry follows its own rule.

Single fees. CIETAC and the ICAC in Moscow charge one arbitration fee that covers both the institution and the tribunal, and it does not depend on the number of arbitrators, except that the ICAC reduces it for a sole arbitrator.

Hourly fees. Where the arbitrators are paid by the hour, the amount in dispute does not determine their fees. For the LCIA, the figure is the LCIA’s own published median of the total cost of cases of the same size, marked as an estimate. For JCAA, it is the ceiling the rules set on the hourly fees. HKIAC arbitrators also bill by the hour unless the parties choose its ad valorem scale, and the entry shows that scale’s ceiling. The ICDR and ICSID publish no scale for arbitrators, so their entries give the institution’s own charges, come last in the list, and give the institution’s published figures on what tribunals cost in their notes.

Expedited procedures

Most institutions offer a faster procedure, usually before a sole arbitrator, that applies by default below a set amount or by the parties’ agreement. “Expedited” shows each institution’s expedited procedure. “Highly expedited” shows a still faster tier where an institution has one: ICC’s Highly Expedited Arbitration Provisions, SIAC’s Streamlined Procedure, KCAB’s Fast-Track Procedure, MCIA’s documents-only expedited arbitration and the SCCA’s Small Claims Procedures. Not every institution has these procedures, and some offer them only for smaller claims, so the list shows only the institutions that offer the procedure chosen for the amount entered and names the others below it, with the limit where there is one. Where a procedure requires a sole arbitrator, the figures assume one whatever the tribunal chosen above.

Only some procedures change the fees. ICC pays arbitrators 80% of its scale, CRCICA 80% of its tables and the SCCA 80% of its average fee. SIAC’s Streamlined Procedure and MCIA’s documents-only cases cost at most half the scale. The SCC’s Expedited Rules, Milan’s simplified procedure and AIAC’s Fast Track have their own, lower tables, and the SCCA’s Small Claims Procedures fixed fees. Elsewhere an expedited case costs the same, though a shorter case costs less where arbitrators bill by the hour or, at ICSID, by the year.

Emergency arbitrators

“Emergency arbitrator” adds what an application for urgent relief before the tribunal is formed costs at each institution: its own fee and the emergency arbitrator’s fee or deposit, both fixed sums at most institutions and counted in the total. VIAC, DIS, ICSID and the ICAC have no emergency arbitrator: until the tribunal is formed, urgent relief comes from the courts, and the entry says so.

The order of the list

“Cheapest first” orders the institutions by the top of each total. “Most used first” orders them by the share of respondents who named the institution’s rules among those they prefer in the 2025 International Arbitration Survey of Queen Mary University of London and White & Case, which publishes that share for nine of the twenty, and then the others by the number of international cases in their own latest statistics. The survey measures preference, not caseload, and international cases are counted differently from one institution to the next, so the order is a guide to how much each institution is used, not a precise measure. The figures are in the table below.

Exchange rates

Amounts are converted at the European Central Bank euro reference rates of October 26, 2026 (crossed through the U.S. dollar), the Bank of Russia’s official rate of October 27, 2026 for the rouble, and the official dollar pegs of the Saudi riyal and the UAE dirham. Fees payable in a currency other than the one you choose will move with the exchange rate.

Why these 20 institutions

The list covers the institutions most used for international commercial and investment arbitration. It starts from the four whose rules users preferred most in the 2025 International Arbitration Survey of Queen Mary University of London and White & Case (ICC, HKIAC, SIAC and LCIA), adds the other institutions with the largest international caseloads in their own published statistics, and includes the leading institution of each major region and seat. The Permanent Court of Arbitration is not included: it charges for its registry services by the hour, so its fees do not follow from the amount in dispute.

Listed most used first. Survey: the share of the 2,402 respondents who named the institution’s rules among those they prefer, in the 2025 survey’s global figures, which it publishes for nine institutions. New cases and international: the institution’s latest published annual numbers, from its own statistics. Institutions count international cases differently (any foreign party at one, parties from different countries at another), so those figures are only roughly comparable.

What does an emergency arbitrator cost?

An application for an emergency arbitrator costs a fixed sum at most institutions, payable on filing and usually not credited to the arbitration. In U.S. dollars, cheapest first:

InstitutionOn filingIn U.S. dollars
ICDR$3,500$3,500
CIETACRMB 30,000≈ $4,500

DIAC$53,000$53,000
ICSIDNo emergency arbitrator
DISNo emergency arbitrator
VIACNo emergency arbitrator
ICACNo emergency arbitrator

The ICDR’s figure is its filing fee only: its emergency arbitrator is paid by the hour. The Swiss Arbitration Centre and CRCICA fix the emergency arbitrator’s fee within a range. Taxes, where they apply, come on top.

What is included and what is not?

The registration or filing fee, the institution’s administrative fee and the arbitrators’ fees, and, when you choose it, an application for an emergency arbitrator. Not included: the parties’ legal costs, the arbitrators’ expenses, hearing costs, experts, translation, a tribunal secretary and taxes, unless an entry says otherwise.

Why does an institution show a range?

ICC, SCC, DIAC, KCAB, the Swiss Arbitration Centre, the Milan Chamber of Arbitration, CRCICA and others set the arbitrators’ fees within a minimum and a maximum. The institution fixes the figure at the end, by the complexity of the case, the time spent and the conduct of the proceedings. Most cases end below the maximum. SIAC publishes only the maximum, shown as “up to”. The list orders institutions by the top of the range so that no institution looks cheaper than it may turn out to be.

Does the number of arbitrators matter?

Usually a great deal. Most scales give the fees of one arbitrator, and a three-member tribunal costs between about twice and three times as much, depending on the institution’s rule: 2.2 times at the SCC, two and a half times at VIAC and the Swiss Arbitration Centre, three times at ICC, DIAC and AIAC. CIETAC’s fee does not change with the size of the tribunal, and the ICAC’s rises by a quarter. Several institutions send smaller claims to an expedited procedure before a sole arbitrator by default, and the entry says so where it applies.

How current are the figures?

The schedules were checked against each institution’s website on October 27, 2026. Institutions revise their fees from time to time, usually from January 1, and a case is normally charged under the schedule in force when it is filed. The official calculator or schedule linked in each entry has the final word.
